The reality of children dying each day from preventable causes in resource-poor nations has remained inexcusable for too long. The vision of Global Health at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia is to reverse that reality and reduce global pediatric deaths by developing and enhancing targeted, sustainable, collaborative partnerships and interventions with developing partner countries.
Since 2004, more than 100 Children's Hospital staff have participated in a Children's Hospital Global Health activity, primarily outside the borders of the United States. More than 4,000 children have received care in another country from a Children's Hospital clinical professional in one of our established programs.
The previously named Alliance for International Medicine program (AIM) has retired the "AIM" name to come under the Global Health efforts of the institution. AIM's previous programs in the Dominican Republic and Botswana are still active and expanding, and are now referred to as the Global Health Caribbean and African programs, respectively. Please visit their pages on this Web site for updates.
In 2008, the Hospital officially designated Global Health as an institutional effort and priority for the future. Rodney Finalle, MD, was named Director of Global Health and leads the effort for the Hospital.
Supported by many clinical and administrative staff, Global Health has set an ambitious goal this year of developing and supporting targeted initiatives, while creating an infrastructure to guide the Hospital's Global efforts to have the most substantial impact possible.
Some of the new and innovative efforts that will become ongoing components of Global Health are the Annual Global Health Symposium, the establishment of the Global Health Advisory Board, and the establishment of the David N. Pincus Global Health Fellowship.
