Melissa Ellis Bennett, MD, Medical Director of HHI, graduated with an AB in Molecular Biology from Princeton University. She completed medical school at The Pennsylvania State College of Medicine at Hershey, where she was the recipient of a Robert Wood Johnson Scholarship to study community pediatrics and child abuse. She pursued her pediatrics training at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia where she volunteered with the Homeless Health Initiative and was honored with the Distinguished First Year Resident Award and the Senior Resident Clinician Award. After completion of residency in 2000, Dr. Bennett joined the faculty at CHOP as a pediatrician at the Primary Care Center at University City. She became director of the Homeless Health Initiative in 2001.
Melissa Berrios, MSW, Social Work Trainer of HHI, received a BA in Sociology and Psychology from the College of St. Elizabeth and an MSW from the University of Pennsylvania. She was the HHI Social Work Intern during 2007-2008. Ms. Berrios has served as a Social Work LEND Fellow since 2007. She is a guest lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Policy and Practice, Temple University and Drexel University.
Karen M. Hudson, MSW, LSW, Program Manager of HHI, recieved a BA in Sociology from Boston University and an MSW for the University of Pennsylvania. She is a pediatric social worker with over 25 years of experience in working with families both in the hospital and in the community. She has been with the HHI since 2001 and serves as the bridge from the Hospital to the community for both the families and the healthcare volunteers. Ms. Hudson serves also as a faculty member of the CHOP Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND) program and as Lecturer of Social Work at the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Policy and Practice. She is a Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia INSIGHTS Forum alumni, was nominated for a Robert Wod Johnson Community Health Leaders Award and is the 2009 University of Pennsylvania Woman of Color faculty award winner.
