The Homeless Health Initiative (HHI) began in 1988 when medical residents and nurses at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia recognized that children living in emergency housing shelters just blocks from the Hospital had little access to medical care and support.
A small group of volunteers began offering free acute medical care onsite in three West Philadelphia shelters several times a year.
Today, hundreds of HHI volunteers of many disciplines, including doctors, nurses, dentists, social workers, and specialists of all kinds provide the following free services to children and families, monthly in each of three local shelters:
