Many of us remember those sleepless nights with new babies. All babies demand a lot of time and energy!
In 2011, the Homeless Health Initiative (HHI) began working with Philadelphia’s Office of Supportive Housing to support new mothers and young infants in emergency housing shelters during the vulnerable first four months of life.
During the pilot phase of the Healthy Baby Project, Sally Poliwoda, BSN, RN, a CHOP nurse, screened new mothers for postpartum depression and monitored the weight and growth of infants.
As this program grows, HHI hopes to continue to give these new families successful and healthy beginnings. With periodic well baby visits, nurses can monitor infants and identify potential problems earlier.
