In recognition of National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness week in November, HHI, CHOP Nursing Department, Ambulatory and the Office of Government Affairs and Community Relations sponsored Thanksgiving dinners at four shelters - Salvation Army Red Shield Family Residence, The People's Emergency Center, ECS St. Barnabas Mission, and Lutheran Settlement House's Jane Addams Place. One hundred twenty volunteers throughout the CHOP community served hot dinners to families and had fun making arts and crafts with the children.
In December, HHI also had an outpouring of volunteers who donated holiday gifts to families and joined families in decorating Christmas trees at the shelters.
National Volunteer Week is the time to thank one of America's most valuable assets - our volunteers - and call attention to all that they do to improve our communities and to help our community's most vulnerable residents - those who are homeless, hungry, elderly, at-risk and those with disabilities. National Volunteer Week will be celebrated April 19 - 25, 2009
Sponsored by the Points of Light Foundation and Volunteer Center National Network, National Volunteer Week began in 1974 when President Nixon signed an executive order establishing the week as an annual celebration of volunteering. Every President since has signed a proclamation promoting National Volunteer Week. Many governors, mayors and other elected officials make public statements and sign proclamations in support of the week.
The leadership of the HHI, Drs. Melissa Bennett and Program Manager, Karen Hudson take this time to thank and salute our faithful and regular volunteers, pediatric residents, attending physicians, dentists, nurses, audiologists, LEND fellows, medical and dental students who take the time out of their busy lives and schedules to support the children and families in homeless shelters.
We also wish to thank the entire CHOP community for their Holiday financial support of the children and families in the HHI shelters during the Holiday season!
