Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer at CHOP

Patient with dogThe volunteers who donate their time to The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia play an important role in the experience of our patients and families.

They work alongside healthcare professionals, help in clinical and non-clinical areas, and support the Hospital's mission to care for not just the patient, but the entire family.

Commitment requirements

The Volunteer Services Department at CHOP requires that candidates interested in volunteering commit to 100 hours of service. The minimum a volunteer can provide service hours through a regular volunteer placement is once a week for a period of 3 hours.

Application process

Applicants will have to complete all of the following before volunteering at CHOP.

  1. Complete a volunteer application
  2. Attend an information session
  3. Successfully complete an interview
  4. Submit background checks: FBI Fingerprint Check, PA Child Abuse Clearance, PA Criminal Record Check
  5. Complete a medical clearance: Immunization record, Tdap vaccination proof, 2-Step PPD, flu shot (as required per flu shot season)
  6. Attend a patient care orientation

The screening process at CHOP may take 6 to 8 weeks depending on how fast clearances are sent to the Volunteer Services Department. Going through part or all of the screening process does not guarantee a volunteer placement. All volunteer placements are filled according to current hospital needs and the volunteer’s time commitment.
