Volunteer Programs at a Glance

All programs listed below, except the Summer Teen Volunteer Program,  require applicants to be at least 18 years of age and out of high school.

Child Life Program

Volunteers assist Child Life Staff/Nursing Staff with age appropriate play activities for patients and siblings in the playroom, at bedside and outpatient areas. Volunteers also assist the unit staff in maintaining safe and clean playrooms/toys for our families and patients. In order to volunteer for this program, we ask that you please be able to commit to a 3 hour shift, 1 day a week for a minimum of 6 consecutive months.

Hospital School Program

Volunteers assist Teaching Staff by tutoring patients and assisting with schoolwork. In order to volunteer for this program, we ask that you please be able to commit to a 3 hour shift, 1 day a week for a minimum of 6 consecutive months. College students majoring in education, or individuals with classroom experience preferred.

Reach Out and Read

Volunteers are responsible for engaging children of all ages with the love of books by reading aloud in waiting rooms. In order to volunteer for this program, we ask that you are able to commit 1-3 hours per week for a minimum of 3 consecutive months.

Hospitality (WayFinders, Ronald Room, etc)

Volunteers will do a variety of things depending on area that assist the families, visitors and staff at CHOP (including but not limited to: escorting families, providing refreshments, etc). In order to volunteer for these programs we ask that you please be able to commit to a 3 hour shift, 1 day a week for a minimum of 3 consecutive months.

Summer Teen Volunteer Program

This program runs for 6 weeks in the summer and is open to high school student’s ages 16 (by June 1st of the current year) through 18 years of age and who are going into 10th, 11th or 12th grades. Specific Information for this program varies from year to year and our application and program Information is usually available in mid-March. Please refer back to this website in mid-March for an application and information regarding this program. Please note that this is a separate application and cannot be supplemented/replaced with a regular adult volunteer application.
