New Employee Orientation

Before You Get Here

Even though your employment at Children's Hospital doesn't officially start until New Employee Orientation, there are some things you need to do before your first day of work.  The resources in this section will help you prepare.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to do before attending orientation?

Once you’ve accepted an offer, schedule your Occupational Health pre-placement evaluation appointment by calling (215) 590-1928 weekdays between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. They will need your immunization records and you will need to take a drug screen before you will be allowed to attend orientation.

You also need to complete required pre-Orientation reading, which can be found in this section. These requirements help the Hospital comply with accreditation requirements.

Please bring the following items with you to your first day at New Employee Orientation:

What should I expect at orientation?

On the first day, at orientation, you will have an opportunity to take care of some essential business such as parking, benefits, computer access, and employee badge pictures (be ready to smile for the camera). You will also participate in exercises designed to give you an understanding of the mission, vision and values of CHOP as well as give you an understanding of our core competencies.

New nurses should make sure to meet with the Nursing Education Department representatives for details about Nursing Orientation.

You will also have an opportunity to network with your fellow new hires and gain valuable information about some of CHOP’s key initiatives.

How can I sign up for direct deposit?

CHOPone is our online network express system for employees to directly access their own information.  The Thursday after your orientation date, you will be able to go online via the CHOP intranet to sign up for direct deposit.

When will I receive my first paycheck?

You can expect to receive your first paycheck two and half weeks after your orientation date. Your first paycheck will be a "live" check, direct deposit will be active for your second paycheck.

What to Bring With You

You must complete the following forms and forward them to the appropriate department prior to your start date, or bring them to orientation, in order to begin work.  You must also bring original documents to verify identity and your eligibility to work in the United States (see I-9 form for a list of acceptable documents) to orientation.

You may not commence work without completing:

Occupational Health Pre-Placement Evaluation

It is the responsibility of each new employee to complete pre-placement health screening requirements prior to beginning work. Failure to complete these requirements will delay your start date.   You must schedule your on-site, Occupational Health Screening as soon as an offer of employment is made.  No visit will be set up after the Thursday prior to your start/orientation date.  To schedule your appointment, call the Occupational Health Department at (215) 590-1928 weekdays between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.

CHOP is an institution that enforces mandatory seasonal flu vaccination. All new hires, union and non-union, who work in patient care buildings are required to receive the seasonal flu vaccine.

Pre-placement Health Evaluations, Immunizations and Drug Test

All employees must complete a pre-placement health evaluation and drug test. Please call the Occupational Health Department weekdays between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. to schedule an appointment. Please bring all your immunization records (e.g. baby book/shot records) to your appointment. Vaccinations will be administered free of charge to employees with inadequate records. These immunizations must be scheduled and administered prior to your start/orientation date.

Tuberculosis Testing

A tuberculosis skin test (known as a PPD/Mantoux test) is required of all new employees.  Please bring a copy of your most recent PPD test. If you have had a “positive” PPD test in the past, bring a record of this test and the report of your most recent chest X-ray.

If you have any questions, contact your Human Resources representative.
