You have only just begun the journey on the pathway to a successful career here at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. There is much more for you to see, learn, and come into contact with during your orientation period. These are some of the requirements and opportunities you will encounter as you move from your first day experience into your various departments.
Because access for clinical systems is restricted depending on job role, training is only available to those employees who have received permission from a manager to get access to that particular system. Generally, training is required before you receive a password. Check with your manager once you begin work; they may already have scheduled you for training.
CHOP Learning Services provides training for both desktop business applications such as e-mail, and clinical software solutions supported by IS.
In addition, troubleshooting, user manuals and tip cards are posted on the Employee Intranet.
Classroom training for common desktop software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are available to all employees, with scheduling through LearningLink.
The Joint Commission (the regulatory body that monitors our compliance to standards of care) requires that all employees complete training within the first 7 days of employment. This training is mandatory. You will receive instructions about CHOP's internal learning management system, LearningLink, on your first day. After you have attended New Employee Orientation, you may access LearningLink internally, via the CHOP Employee intranet or from your home computer. To access LearningLink directly, click here.
The Hospital uses the STAR (Staff Time and Reporting) System to track hours worked. The procedure differs for exempt (those paid an annual salary) and non-exempt (those paid by the hour) employees. Exempt employees record their days worked and time off electronically through a link to STAR from the Hospital intranet. Instructions on how to use the system are available on the intranet. Non-exempt employees record time worked by swiping their ID badges at reader clocks situated throughout Hospital facilities. You should use the reader clock closest to your regular work location, or wherever you begin or end work on a given day. Non-exempt employees should begin to swipe in on their second day of work.
You can expect to receive your first paycheck about two and half weeks after your orientation date. Some departments have special orientations set up for new employees. Ask your supervisor or office manager. These orientations focus on specifics such as organization, goals and vision, key initiatives, and departmental procedures. They are usually held within 90 days of your start date. Even if your department doesn’t have a formal orientation process, you can expect to learn about day-to-day details of your job from your supervisor and co-workers. Don’t hesitate to ask questions!
