All staff should be knowledgeable about the location of fire alarms, and extinguishers in the event of a fire. When working in the hospital, staff is required to follow the RACE protocol described below. When assigned to a facility outside the Main Campus (the Main Hospital, Wood Building, Seashore House and the Abramson Research Center), staff is advised to follow the direction of the local Fire Department in case of fire.

In the event of an unconfined fire outside a Hospital facility, follow the following steps:
Hazardous Spills in a Hospital facility – Notify your supervisor & Dial 45500
Hazardous Spills outside a Hospital facility – Immediately contact your CHOP Supervisor for instruction
Emergency situations on the premises of The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia should be immediately reported by dialing extension 45500. Should you encounter an emergency situation off Hospital premises in the course of your work, a call should be placed immediately to 911. A second call to your Hospital-based supervisor should also be made to describe the situation.
In the event of a medical emergency, contact your immediate supervisor for direction.
In the event of an External Disaster, the decision to declare a disaster alert will be made by the Senior Attending in the Emergency Department. A determination is made whether the disaster is Level I, Level II, or Level III.
