New Employee Orientation

Working at CHOP

Welcome to what we know will be an exciting career at CHOP!   Working at CHOP is not like working at any other pediatric institution.  Our commitment to the needs of our patients, families, and our employees has been recognized by Child Magazine, U.S.News & World Report, and Great Places to Work.

Relating to Patients and Families

The Cultural Effectiveness Initiative is making the Hospital accessible, welcoming and more inviting for all families, whatever their linguistic, cultural, dietary or spiritual needs. The Initiative coordinates and unifies many ongoing division-specific projects and programs working toward a more culturally effective workplace. It also provides institution-wide training and education.

Some resources we provide to families include:

We also have language identification cards, which can be used by patients when they need interpreter services.

Our Nutrition Services are also prepared to create meals that accommodate various cultural and dietary needs of those we serve.

Delivering care to patients and families in a culturally effective manner benefits everyone. It increases patient satisfaction, patient safety, and patient adherence and may even improve patient health outcomes. It improves staff job performance and can increase job satisfaction, increasing the value of services delivered.

Smoke-Free Campus

Because of our concerns for the health of our patients, staff and visitors, every location in the CHOP Care Network is 100% smoke-free. Employees are not permitted to smoke on CHOP property which includes any of CHOP’s owned buildings and in accordance with city and local ordinances (e.g. 20 feet from building in Philadelphia) for leased buildings (e.g. Wanamaker, 3535 Market).

Employee Appearance

The Children's Hospital strives to be an organization where employees enjoy their work environment while creating extraordinary results. We also want it to be a place where open communication occurs comfortably across all levels.

To help meet these goals, the Hospital has an Employee Appearance Policy. Here are highlights; the full policy is available on the Hospital Intranet.

In addition, we have a Friday Business Casual dress code.

Acceptable Business Casual Attire (Fridays)

  1. Choose business casual clothing that communicates professionalism.
  2. Keep your Friday schedule into account when you are dressing. Casual business attire means clothing that allows employees to feel comfortable at work, yet appropriate for a professional environment.
  3. Casual business attire includes, but is not limited to: slacks, khakis, sport shirts, polo and cotton shirts, golf shirts, skirts and dresses, denim skirts, walking shorts, turtlenecks, sweaters, loafers, and sandals.
  4. We ask that you NOT WEAR jeans, shorts, bib overalls, halter-tops, beachwear, workout attire, tank tops, tee shirts, spandex or other form-fitting pants, or distracting, offensive or revealing clothes. In addition, we ask that you not wear athletic shoes, thongs, or slippers.
  5. Any employee who performs any work assignments in patient care areas must wear closed-toed shoes. The primary purpose for this requirement is for safety reasons.
  6. Managers and supervisors are responsible for interpreting and enforcing dress and grooming standards in their areas of responsibility.

Employee Recognition

The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia recognizes the importance of appreciating commitment and acknowledging outstanding contributions to the hospital’s mission of improving the health of children. Human Resources provides an array of activities on behalf of the Hospital to meet these objectives.

BRAVO!

BRAVO! is an online employee points-based recognition system that enables employees to earn AwardperQs® that can be collected and redeemed for a variety of merchandise. Employees can earn AwardperQs for various types of recognitions.

Length of Service Recognition

All employees celebrating milestone anniversaries are recognized with AwardperQ®s. Employees celebrating a 5-year milestone also receive a service award pin. Employees celebrating a 25, 30, 35, 40, or 45 year milestone are invited to a formal evening event (Walk of Fame) held offsite.

Discount Programs

CHOP collaborates with numerous outside organizations and companies to offer special pricing and discounts to its employees.  Some of the discounts include:

Computer Access and Services

E-Mail

Most Hospital employees receive an e-mail account. If your supervisor has requested that your account be set up prior to your Orientation date, you can expect to receive a user name and temporary password at Orientation.

Under Hospital policy, e-mail correspondence is the property of the Hospital, and employee e-mail communications are NOT considered private.

Clinical and Financial Systems

Access to clinical and/or financial systems depends upon your job role, and requires prior approval by a supervisor. In some cases, an additional form is needed to document your need for access.

Because training is required before you are given access to any clinical or financial system, these user names and passwords are not distributed at Orientation. Your supervisor may already have scheduled training for you.

Remote Access

Some clinical employees are granted remote access to clinical systems. If this is the case, you will receive a remote access security device and further instructions after you begin work.

Intranet

The Hospital Intranet is accessible through any computer workstation at Hospital facilities, including Philadelphia and all satellite locations. The Intranet is a valuable resource for news and events, policies and procedures, details on initiatives such as patient privacy and information security, and more.

World Wide Web

According to Hospital policy, the Internet should be used for business-related purposes and minimal personal use only. The hospital’s computer network automatically blocks some sites deemed to be inappropriate for Hospital use.
