Clinical Microbiology Laboratory

The Clinical Microbiology Laboratory at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia is a state-of-the-art laboratory that performs testing for the detection of a wide range of human pathogens including aerobic and anaerobic bacteria; yeasts and molds; blood, tissue, and enteric parasites; and mycobacteria.

Techniques used in our laboratory include culture from an extensive variety of specimens, special stains, direct antigen detection, toxin immunoassay, and molecular diagnostics. Once isolated and identified, antimicrobial susceptibility testing is performed on bacteria and yeast.

Additional services include reference-level organism identification, support to infection prevention and control programs, research, education, and clinical consultation.

The clinical microbiology team is committed to supporting patient quality and safety. The laboratory has a variety of ongoing quality indicators and initiatives geared toward ensuring that patients are consistently receiving appropriate, accurate, and timely clinical microbiology services.
