Background

Since 2013, Jessica Hertzog, MSW, LSW, has been providing care and support to families who receive a life-altering diagnosis of a birth defect as a Social Worker in the Richard D. Wood Jr. Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment (CFDT) at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). Prior to her current position, Jessica worked within the department of child welfare and in the emergency room offering trauma informed care.

Jessica co-authored the chapter on the role of social work in fetal surgery for the commonly used textbook, “Social Work in Health Settings." When families travel worldwide to receive specialized medical care at CHOP it can disrupt the family system, impact the family financially, and cause a rift in the relationship of the couple. Jessica provides resources, referrals and education to assist during this tumultuous time. Having a baby is always a life-changing moment for a family. Jessica helps to prepare the parent(s) for their upcoming experience of caring for their newborn in the Newborn/Infant Intensive Care Unit. Preparation and education can help to make the experience less traumatic.

Jessica earned her bachelor’s degree from Elizabethtown College and her master’s degree from Temple University. She is a licensed social worker in Pennsylvania.
