As a nurse practitioner, my role is to coordinate care for children with cancer, provide clinical care to patients and families, and to support clinical care. I work in collaboration with our physician colleagues to provide the best care possible to our oncology patients. Teaching newly diagnosed families about their child’s disease is an important part of this process. I especially enjoy knowing that I have an impact in a child’s treatment and have the ability to make a very difficult time in a family’s life a bit more tolerable.
My area of specialty is in hematologic malignancies; that is, children and young adults that have any blood malignancies (leukemia, lymphoma). I like working with this group (Liquid Team) and continue to grow professionally as new advancements are constantly being made in this area. Over the past 17 years of my nursing profession I have witnessed an increase in cure rates and it is thrilling to be a part of such advancements. I also have the opportunity to share my advanced practice knowledge with staff by lecturing on different hematological malignancies topics.
I have been most impressed by how resilient children are and the strength of families who are cared for at CHOP. It amazes me how parents can muster a laugh, let alone a smile, while their children are being treated for some type of cancer.
