Background

Oana Tomescu, MD, PhD, is the Director of the Adolescent Medicine Fellowship Training Program and an attending physician in the Division of Adolescent Medicine at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. She is board certified in internal medicine. Previously, she attended the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, and has lived in Philadelphia for the past 15 years.

The core of Dr. Tomescu's clinical interests is caring for medically- and psychosocially-complex youth as they transition from pediatric to adult care. She has maintained her adult clinical practice during her fellowship so she can explore different transition models, and serve as the primary care doctor of a diverse set of adult patients, aged 16 through 88. In her adolescent practice, she also sees a wide variety of patients; some for primary care, others as consults, and many for family planning (sexual health).

Clinically, she often serves as a bridge between these two large clinical centers (CHOP and HUP), both for patients as well as for other providers who seek connections on 'the other side.'

Dr. Tomescu's research interests include exploring the effects of chronic illness on adolescent coping and stress management. She is also very interested in studying the balance between emotional health (well-being) and burnout/disability in several different populations, including medical students/residents, as well as patients themselves.

Lastly, Dr. Tomescu is involved in medical education on several different levels. She is helping develop the current Medicine/Pediatrics curriculum and conference schedule. She gives lectures on adolescent-related issues to internal medicine residents at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, as well as to the pediatric residents at Children's Hospital. She also teaches history, physical exam, and differential diagnosis skills to second year medical students.
