Background

Dr. Abigail Farber was a community pediatrician "for a generation" of children in Minnesota, including many who were internationally adopted. She was a consultant to a Waiting Children's program (special needs adoption), and visited orphanages abroad. After returning to Philadelphia, she was medical director of inpatient services at Children's Seashore House (now part of Children's Hospital), working primarily with children with chronic illnesses, feeding difficulties and developmental disabilities.

The opportunity to develop the International Adoption Health Program at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia has enabled her to utilize her experiences of longitudinal work with families who have children who are developing typically and who have children with complex medical and/or developmental issues. It also incorporates her interest in other cultures, in building a family with diverse roots and strengths, and in physical, developmental, and psychosocial healing. She and her husband are parents of four adult children, one of whom was adopted internationally. She has visited orphanages in Korea, Romania and Vietnam, and traveled extensively in SE Asia. In 2006 she participated with a medical training team in Vietnam.
