  • Background

    Joel A. Fein MD is a professor of Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and an attending physician in the Emergency Department at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. His areas of interest include violence prevention and pain management in children and adolescents.

    Dr. Fein is the co-director of the Emergency Department Violence Intervention Project at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and The University of Pennsylvania Medical Center. He has published several review articles and original research papers on the topic of violence prevention and the evaluation of post-traumatic stress disorder. 

    He is the chairman of the Patient Satisfaction Subcommittee at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, a member of the Youth Fatality Review Team of the Philadelphia Department of Health and Physicians for Social Responsibility. He is a member of the board of directors for the Philadelphia Anti-Drug Anti-Violence Network.  Dr. Fein  won the 2002 Physician of the Year Award from the Pennsylvania Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians, "...for his commitment to promoting positive social change, his generous contribution of time to the prevention of violence, and his untiring devotion to bettering the lives of children and young adults in the Philadelphia community."  Additionally, he was the recipient of the 2000 Humanism in Medicine Award at The University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, which serves " recognize and honor a graduating medical student and an outstanding faculty member who are judged to be exemplary in their compassion and sensitivity in the delivery of healthcare to patients and family members."
