Mary Catherine Harris, MD, is a senior attending neonatologist at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, an Advisory Dean at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and director of residency recruitment at Children's Hospital. She also is a Professor of Pediatrics at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.
After receiving her medical degree from Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH, Dr. Harris completed a residency in Pediatrics at the Children's Hospital Medical Center (Harvard), Boston, Massachusetts and a fellowship in neonatal-perinatal medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Currently, Dr. Harris serves as attending physician in the Newborn/Infant Intensive Care Unit at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. She is also highly active in recruitment, training and mentoring of medical students, residents and fellows in Pediatrics and Neonatology. She is a member of the Graduate Education Committee and a faculty advisor for medical students, residents and fellows.
Dr. Harris' areas of expertise include infectious diseases and the inflammatory response, an interest that has been cultivated over many years. Her research has focused on the role of cytokines in sepsis and necrotizing enterocolitis in newborn infants. Dr. Harris has published extensively on neonatal septicemia, meningitis and NEC. Her secondary research interest is in the area of medical education, where she has published on issues such as career choices among pediatric residents, and the value of the interview in the residency application process.
