  • Background

Sheela N. Magge, MD, MSCE, grew up outside of Cincinnati, OH, and completed her BA in the Biochemical Sciences from HarvardUniversity in 1992. She attended YaleUniversitySchool of Medicine, and then completed her pediatrics residency training at Children’s Hospital of Boston. Dr. Magge then moved to The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where she completed her fellowship in pediatric endocrinology in 2004.   During her fellowship, she enrolled in the Masters Program at the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the PennSchool of Medicine. She completed this program with a focus on patient-oriented research, and got her masters in clinical epidemiology in 2006.

Dr. Magge stayed on at CHOP, and has pursued a career in patient-oriented research in the field of pediatric obesity, pre-diabetes, and type 2 diabetes. She has been involved in several different studies, including a comparison of obese siblings of children with type 2 diabetes to a group of obese control children, and a study of the metabolic syndrome in children. Dr. Magge was awarded a K23 Career Development Award from the NIH to study dyslipidemia and cardiovascular risk factors in pediatric obesity and type 2 diabetes, and this study is currently underway.

She is concerned that children diagnosed with obesity and type 2 diabetes during childhood may face cardiovascular complications at much younger ages than in previous generations. Dr. Magge would eventually like to conduct prospective intervention trials in at risk adolescents, to help prevent or decrease longterm cardiovascular morbidity.

Dr. Magge also enjoys her clinical practice, and sees patients in her continuity clinic with a focus on pediatric pre-diabetes and those at risk for type 2 diabetes, but also sees patients in all areas of pediatric endocrinology.
