Background

Dr. Osterhoudt is an attending physician in the Division of Emergency Medicine and the medical director of the Poison Control Center at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), and is professor of Pediatrics at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Dr. Osterhoudt is an Associate Fellow for the Center for Injury Prevention and Research at CHOP, and is an Associate Scholar in the Center for Global Health and a faculty member in the Community Outreach and Education Core of the Center of Excellence in Environmental Toxicology at Penn. He has co-authored over 100 journal articles and textbook chapters, and serves on the editorial boards of Pediatric Emergency Care and Clinical Toxicology.

Dr. Osterhoudt is recognized for teaching excellence and was awarded the David Cornfeld Bedside Teaching Award by The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia in 2005, the Scott Mackler Award for Excellence in Teaching by the University of Pennsylvania in 2008, and the ACMT Award for Significant Contributions to the Educational Pursuits of Medical Toxicology by the American College of Medical Toxicology in 2009. In 2016, Dr. Osterhoudt was recognized as an Alan R. Cohen Master Clinician at CHOP, and was inducted into Penn Medicine’s Academy of Master Clinicians in 2020. He has served nationally on the Board of Directors of the American College of Medical Toxicology, as the American Board of Pediatrics' representative to the medical toxicology sub-board, and on the Executive Committee of the Council on Environmental Health of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He is currently a member of the Executive Committee of the AAP’s Council on Injury, Violence, and Poisoning Prevention.

Dr. Osterhoudt's academic interests include the clinical epidemiology and risk assessment of pediatric poisoning exposures, and methemoglobinemia disorders during infancy.
