Background

It is important to pediatric urologist Mark Zaontz, MD, to understand the needs and concerns of each of his patients and their families. He approaches his practice in a friendly, compassionate manner. And he works hard to provide the best, state-of-the-art care possible.

Dr. Zaontz chose the field of pediatric urology because he loves taking care of children. He loves the fact that it is a specialty that spans many areas and skill sets. He provides primary care for patients, as well as surgical treatment for a variety of conditions. He performs plastic surgery for genitourinary reconstruction, in the Division of Urology. It is gratifying to him to be able to help his patients with his expertise and skills.

Dr. Zaontz has an interest in conditions that need attention to detail. Hypospadias surgery is one of his passions and research focus. He’s an expert in treating genital reconstructive conditions, hydronephrosis, upper urinary tract obstruction or reflux, among other urologic conditions.

Dr. Zaontz sees the field of pediatric urology evolving in exciting ways. “There is a strong shift toward evidence-based medicine so that we become better at what we do and more importantly, know what not to do,” he explains.

As our understanding of conditions improve, such as congenital malformations, treatment improves. “I get excited when we improve our understanding of conditions," explains Dr. Zaontz. "We are becoming better reconstructive surgeons through clinical and basic science research.”

Dr. Zaontz’s research is focused on improving outcomes in hypospadias reconstruction, specifically in the more severe cases.
