Hand Transplantation Program
Surgeons at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) were the first in the world to perform a bilateral hand transplant on a child. Our research and work in this groundbreaking field of medicine led us to establish the Hand Transplantation Program. Our program is supported by external expenditures including the following; surgeons from Penn and Shriners Hospital for Children, the Penn Transplant Institute, the Hospital’s Division of Plastic, Reconstructive and Oral Surgery, Division of Orthopaedics, Transplant Program, Occupational and Physical Therapy, Neurology, Neuro-radiology, Psychology, Pharmacy, and Social Work. The program aims to improve quality of life for children who may benefit from this procedure.

Our Team
The Hand Transplantation Program relies on the expertise of dozens of healthcare professionals to support patients and families through the waiting period, surgery, recovery and rehabilitation. These include hand surgeons, plastic surgeons, attending physicians, nursing staff, anesthesiologists, pharmacists, occupational and physical therapists, social workers and psychologists.
