On November 23, 1855 the
following notice appeared in the Philadelphia Public Ledger:
From its simple beginnings on Blight Street, The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia has grown and developed into one of the leading patient care, education and research centers in the world. It now occupies four buildings on its main campus and houses one of the nation's largest training programs in general pediatrics, as well as programs in all pediatric subspecialties. Despite the growth in the size of its programs, the mission of the Hospital has remained the sameto care for children with illness or injury and to care for all children despite their economic circumstance. We continue to practice medicine with the belief that good health is the right of all children. As was noted in 1855, we will provide care to any child in need. The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia looks back with pride on its rich history and tradition. However, we also look to the future and the changing healthcare environment and future needs of our trainees. We have built a large patient care network, including four urban primary care centers, four regional community hospital-based inpatient services, eight community-based subspecialty centers, a suburban ambulatory surgery center, a home care program, a regional poison control center and dozens of affiliated primary care practices. This network, along with the excellent core facilities at our main campus, ensure a continuing leadership role for The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
We have trained many leaders in pediatrics in the past and will continue that tradition. Those who choose to come to The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia have their eyes on excellence and strive for a leadership role within their field of choice, whether a primary care practice or an academic career. Our housestaff is a wonderful blend of physicians with different backgrounds, different medical school training experiences and different career aspirations. Our goal as an institution is to provide the core of general pediatrics training that will serve as a foundation of any career choice. We care deeply about our training responsibility and we care deeply about our trainees. We look forward to your consideration of The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia for your pediatric residency training. I hope to see each of you when you come to interview and to tell you of our important role in shaping pediatrics in the past and our exciting plans for the future.
