As a child with cerebral palsy grows, spinal disorders may worsen. For children with more severe involvement, scoliosis (curvature of the spine) is likely. Braces are not effective for children whose scoliosis is related to cerebral palsy. The curves are likely to progress, and if not treated, can become severe. If this happens, the child's heart and lung function can be affected.
Orthopaedic surgeons at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia use surgery to correct severe scoliosis associated with cerebral palsy.
