The Nicholas and Athena Karabots Pediatric Care Center, made possible through a gift from the Karabots Foundation, will provide pediatric care in West Philadelphia. Located at 48th and Market Street, the center will also provide families access to Children's Hospital's community programs such as Reach Out and Read, the Homeless Health Initiative, Community Asthma Prevention Program (CAPP) and a domestic violence program.
CHOP has always been committed to providing high quality primary care to patients in our own backyard as well as around the world. Through a generous donation by Athena and Nicholas Karabots, we will build a new, state-of-the-art Primary Care Center at 48th and Market Street. Our Pediatric and Adolescent Care Centers at 36th and Market Street and 39th and Chestnut Street will merge to form this new center that will provide primary and preventive health care services to underserved children in the West Philadelphia area. Care Network sites in South Philadelphia and Cobbs Creek will remain open to provide services to children in those areas.
Nicholas Karabots is the Chairman of the Spartan Organization, Inc. and its family of companies, which includes Kappa Publishing Group, Inc., the largest publisher of puzzle magazines in the nation. He and his family are well-known for their philanthropic efforts. The Karabots have made major contributions to create the Karabots Center for MRI Diagnostics at Montgomery Hospital and contributed to various causes that focus on youth and inner cities. The Karabots Foundation was a major contributor to the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
We are planning to open the Nicholas and Athena Karabots Pediatric Center toward the end of 2012.
We will work closely with the community and its leaders to make a positive impact in the community through providing quality pediatric care and sharing resources to meet the needs of the community.
Based on the needs assessment data for children's health in the West Philadelphia community, we are certain that our presence will not infringe on other providers currently providing similar services. We will enhance the care provided rather than replace any current services.
