Farah was diagnosed with a type of leukemia when she was 14 years old and the treatment for her diagnosis is known to damage the reproductive system. The treatment could have made her infertile. Dr. Jill Ginsberg, director of the Cancer Survivorship Program at The Cancer Center at CHOP, suggested that Farah undergo a procedure to remove and freeze some of her ovarian tissue, as part of a research study, to improve her childbearing options. Dr. Ginsberg is the first to explore fertility preservation in a pediatric setting for girls and boys who have not reached puberty, and is developing options for them, as well as teen patients.
