Did You Know? Prevalence of HPV

HPV is the most common sexually transmitted disease in the United States and in the world. Twenty million Americans are currently infected with HPV and an additional 6 million Americans are infected every year. Half of those newly infected with HPV are between 15 and 24 years of age.

Ask the VEC: Adolescence and the HPV Vaccine

Q. My daughter is not sexually active. Why should I even consider getting her vaccinated against HPV now?

A. The HPV vaccine is recommended before the start of sexual activity for two reasons:

  1. Young people tend to get infected more frequently; in fact, about half of all new infections are diagnosed in girls and young women between 15 and 24 years of age.
  2. It takes six months to complete the series of three vaccines, so even though your daughter may not be active now, or even in six months, it is better to have the series completed sooner rather than later.

Around the World: GAVI Alliance to introduce the HPV vaccine

The GAVI Alliance, a public-private global health partnership, recently announced that it will take the first steps towards introducing HPV and rubella vaccines in developing countries. This project is good news for women in developing countries who will now be able to enjoy the same protection from HPV as women in developed nations.
