Renal Donor Evaluation Protocol
Please note that the following protocol for living kidney donor is for informational purposes only. If you have a patient you'd like considered for a living donor kidney transplant, please contact the Kidney Transplant office at 215-590-3912 for more information.
Each potential donor must undergo:
- ABO blood type confirmation
- Tissue typing and crossmatch with potential recipient
- Physical examination, including blood pressure, pulse and weight
- Urinalysis with microscopy
- Urine for culture and sensitivity
- Gynecological examination with Pap smear for all females
- Mammogram for all females over 35
- PSA for males over 45
If the results of the above tests are normal, please do the following:
- 24-hour urine for creatinine clearance and protein (perform twice), with serum levels obtained
- Fasting glucose and two hours post-prandial
- Blood work to include the following:
- Comprehensive metabolic panel (must include Na, K, Cl, BUN,
creatinine, glucose, Ca, total protein, Mg and P) - Liver Function Screen (ALT, AST, total bilirubin, direct bilirubin,
Alk phos, LDH, albumin and GGT) - Complete blood count with platelet count and differential
- PT/PTT
- RPR
- HBsAg, HBCoreAb, HBsAb
- HCV
- EBV
- CMV Titer
- HIV
- Comprehensive metabolic panel (must include Na, K, Cl, BUN,
- EKG
- PPD
- CXR
- KUB

After these results have been reviewed, a history and physical examination with a nephrologist, renal ultrasound and renal angiogram will be performed at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
