Whether this is your child's first hospitalization or one of many, the experience can be stressful for the whole family. Parents have an important role in helping their child feel comfortable. Familiar routines such as bathing, dressing, feeding, reading and playing can help your child to adjust. Your child's nurse will welcome you to your room and give you a tour of the unit. Please feel free to ask the staff any questions that you may have. Items From Home Many units have a playroom where children and family members can play together and participate in activities that are familiar and age-appropriate. There are supervised activities at various times throughout the week. If your child cannot come to the play-room, a child life specialist will make a bedside visit. Please ask the child life specialist to help you borrow toys, games and books for your child. Please bring your child's bathrobe. Diapers, soap, shampoo, pajamas and slippers for patients are available on the units. ShowersSome patient rooms have shower facilities that parents may use. If your room does not have a shower, ask your child's nurse to direct you to a shower near the unit. You may also use the shower facility in the Connelly Resource Center for Families on the eighth floor of the Main Building. Personal Electrical Appliances Plug-in hair dryers, curling irons, radios, etc. are not permitted in patient care areas. Battery-operated appliances are allowed.
