ED Pathway for Evaluation/Treatment of Children with Sexual Abuse Concerns

Sexual Abuse Concern

This pathway should be used to guide the care of all children and adolescents < 16 years of age who present to the ED with a complaint of sexual abuse or sexual assault.

Patients ≥ 16 years of age who require medical evaluation will be evaluated at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia after they are screened by the CHOP triage nurse, social worker and attending physician.

Asymptomatic patients ≥ 16 years of age who present to CHOP ED following an acute sexual assault and require evidence collection will be referred to The Special Victims Unit.

Patients must be transported to Philadelphia Sexual Assault Response Center by police because the center is only open when police notify the staff of a victim.

SVU must contact the examiner. Call 215-685-3251 to notify SVU of transfer to SVU. SVU and Philadelphia Sexual Assault Response Center is located in the same building. All patients must first go to SVU
