Clinical Pathway for the Care of Children Post-CPR

Physical Examination and Neurologic Assessment

Perform physical exam, including pupillary reactivity to light, cough and gag reflex Obtain Blood Pressure, pulse oximetry for saturation Obtain Glasgow Coma Score (GCS)”

Mental Status

Conscious Arousable and can be alert
Attentive, and follow age-appropriate commands
If asleep, responds promptly to loud voice or noxious stimulus and, once awake, remains attentive
Coma Does not respond to loud voice or noxious stimulus
Does not respond — except with reflex response or posturing — and does not make any verbal response

Note

Always consider the patient’s baseline neurologic status
Decisions should be made on change in neurologic status following arrest
Use judgment if the patient has baseline severe neurologic dysfunction
