Urine Collection Methods

PATIENTS WHO ARE NOT FULLY TOILET-TRAINED
Bagged Urine Specimens Can be used for screening UA
NEVER use for culture
If UA positive, obtain a catheterized specimen for repeat urine dip and culture
Catheterization Optimal method to obtain urine for culture in children who are not fully toilet-trained
Suprapubic tap Requires US guidance
May be useful in children when catheterization fails, for example, uncircumcised, abnormal urethra or fused labia
PATIENTS WHO ARE FULLY TOILET-TRAINED
Clean-catch Fully toilet trained defined as daytime dryness without accidents
