Pediatric Critical Events Checklist Available as Mobile App

Pedi Crisis mobile app available to help healthcare providers during critical events

The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, in association with the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia (SPA), recently launched Pedi Crisis, a free mobile app designed to help healthcare providers during critical events such as pediatric cardiac arrest and anaphylaxis.

The app provides pathways and algorithms for decision support during pediatric critical events. The 18 weight-based, interactive algorithms were developed by the SPA as part of a multi-institutional expert panel within the Quality and Safety Committee. The algorithms provide guidelines for the management of:

  • Anaphylaxis
  • Bradycardia
  • Cardiac arrest
  • Difficult airway management
  • Operating room fire
  • Hyperkalemia
  • Hypertension
  • Hypotension
  • Local anesthetic toxicity
  • Loss of evoked potentials
  • Malignant hyperthermia
  • Myocardial ischemia
  • Tachycardia
  • Tension pneumothorax
  • Transfusion reaction
  • Trauma
  • Head trauma
  • Venous air embolism

Pedi Crisis is available for download in the iTunes App Store.

A beta version is available for Windows 8 in the Windows Store.

About the app

This app is designed to be useful for any physician or other healthcare provider who cares for children, whether full-time or on an occasional basis. The major benefit of the app is its decision support during rare or unusual events; even experienced providers will benefit from the checklist format for care optimization during emergencies.

The application creates a log of events which can be used to review the algorithm pathway. This log may be useful for education such as debriefing a trainee after a simulation. Additional features include weight-based medication dose calculation for emergency medications specific to each algorithm.

The algorithms were developed by the Quality and Safety Committee of the SPA and were adapted to the app format by a team of anesthesiology and critical care physicians and informatics experts at CHOP, including: Mohamed Rehman, MD, Jorge Galvez, MD, Justin Lockman, MD, Laura Schleelein, MD and Allan Simpao, MD.

Suggestions and feedback are welcome. Please send all feedback and questions to the Pedi Crisis team.
