Adoption Family Program: Working Through Issues Related to Adoption

Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013 from 10:30 am to 7:00 pm

210 Mall Boulevard
King of Prussia, PA 19406

We are excited to welcome Cheryl Nitz, MSW, expert in post adoption issues. "Mom, my friend said that you are not my real mom, is it true?" "Dad, I cannot play football well, but I am great at music -- will you still love me?"

While the similarities between our children and our adoptive parents can be incredulous, the differences and how they can come up in life can cause disparity, stress, worry, and strain on a parent-child relationship.

Just because you are open enough to adopt a child transracially does not always mean you are fine with divulging your child's life history with another party. Please join us as Cheryl explores with parents the explicit adoption related challenges their children may face, and offers direct counseling strategies on how to discuss these topics with their children. We hope that this time with Cheryl will help families and children learn ways to discuss and celebrate the similarities AND the differences within and between families.

Parents will work directly with Cheryl on the issues and key responses to behaviors a child may display related to the issues; as well as present supportive ways to engage children and parents in discussions about the challenges that being adopted can pose across the lifespan.

Children will participate in programming that will carefully and thoughtfully bring up issues children are feeling, how they can bring the issues to their parents attention, and strategies to explore feelings and concerns related to those issues.

You only need to order ONE ticket for your entire family to attend a session. If you have adopted children in more than one age group, please email CHOPAdopt@email.chop.edu so we can help you decide which group session is the best fit for your family. We welcome families who are both pre-adoption and post-adoption. Just choose the ticket type that is right for you. Please note: the number of pre-adoption women who can attend Mom's Club is unlimited!
