Open Airway Surgeries
The following airway surgeries are done through an open approach, meaning a surgical incision is made through the skin of the neck so the surgeon can access the malformed structures of the child's airway.
Open Surgery Types
Explanation of three common airway surgeries conducted at CHOP.
- LTR: single-stage repair — Used to enlarge a narrowed airway and remove the child's tracheostomy tube in a single surgery
- LTR: double-stage repair — Used to enlarge a narrowed airway. The child's tracheostomy tube is removed in a second surgery
- Laryngotracheal cleft repair — Used to repair more severe forms (grades 3 and 4) of laryngotracheal clefts
- Partial cricotracheal resection — Used to remove a short section of scarring at the level of the cricoid and the tracheal segment immediately below it
- Tracheal resection — Used to remove a section of scarring within the trachea
- Slide tracheoplasty — Used to manage more severe grades of long-segment tracheal stenosis or complete tracheal rings.
- Tracheostomy — Used to create an opening into the windpipe below the level of the vocal cords
- Recurrent laryngeal nerve reinnervation — Used to treat hoarseness caused by vocal cord paralysis or immobility
