Hakon Hakonarson, MD, PhD

Director of the Center for Applied Genomics

Dr. Hakonarson has an extensive track record in human genetics. He has served in several senior posts in the past, including as the head of inflammatory and pharmacogenomics research and the vice president of clinical sciences for the biopharmaceutical industry and as the chief scientific officer for the CRO, deCODE genetics, Inc. Dr. Hakonarson has been the principal or co-principal investigator on several National Institute of Health-sponsored grants, including the Neurodevelopmental Genomics: Trajectories of Complex Phenotypes, the largest project ever supported by the National Institute of Mental Health.

With over ten years of experience in pioneering genomic research and genome-wide mapping and association studies, Dr. Hakonarson has the intimate knowledge of the complexities of large-scale genomics projects. Through his leadership, CAG has published numerous high-impact papers in some of the most prestigious scientific medical journals, including Nature, Nature Genetics, Journal of the American Medical Association, Journal of Clinical Investigation, and Proceedings of the National Academic Sciences.
