Struan Grant, PhD

Associate Director of the Center for Applied Genomics

Dr. Grant has an extensive track record in human genetics and has developed an international reputation amongst his peers, in particular for two major discoveries that he made during his career before coming to CAG. During his PhD in Scotland, Dr. Grant published in the high profile scientific journal, Nature Genetics, details of a mutation in a collagen gene and its impact on bone density and resulting fractures. This ultimately led to the commercialization of this mutation as a diagnostic test for osteoporosis.

Following this work, he was employed within the biopharmaceutical industry where he served as the Division Head for Cardiovascular and Bone diseases. Subsequent discoveries made international news in disease areas related to his Division, including discoveries in heart attack, osteoporosis, stroke and obesity. More recently he reported the identification of a major type 2 diabetes gene in Nature Genetics, which received extensive media coverage including featuring on the front page of the New York Times in January, 2006.
