Breastfeeding call to action

Diane L. Spatz, PhD, RN-BC, FAAN, director of Lactation at CHOP, joined U.S. Surgeon General Regina Benjamin on Jan. 20, 2011, for the release of "The Surgeon General's Call to Action to Support Breastfeeding." In this video, Dr. Spatz discusses the importance of breastfeeding in the lives of at-risk newborns and provides lactation support at CHOP for a new mother and her 2-day-old daughter. CHOP named among top breastfeeding-friendly businesses

The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia was one of three local winners of the 2010 Breastfeeding-Friendly Business Award. The Philadelphia-based employers were recognized for their exceptional efforts to support breastfeeding employees, ahead of the nation's laws. Section 4207 of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), or healthcare reform, required workplace breastfeeding support, effective March 23, 2010.

As part of the Philadelphia Department of Public Health's Get Healthy Philly initiative, Maternity Care Coalition is promoting the health and economic benefits of breastfeeding to strengthen breastfeeding support in Philadelphia workplaces. Watch the video.

Janet Lewis talks about taking Dr. Diane Spatz's course at the University of Pennsylvania called "Nursing 361: A Seminar in Breastfeeding and Human Lactation" and how she was able to apply the real world application she learned in the class towards helping her niece who was a new mom who had some difficultly breastfeeding. Breastfeeding or Pumping? Try GEMS

The Group of Empowered Moms (GEMS) is a support group for breastfeeding/pumping moms of CHOP patients.

Led by CHOP's certified breastfeeding counselors, the group meets at 4:30 p.m. on the second Friday of each month in Room 2NW85 at the Main Hospital.
