The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia offers a number of services for moms who are breastfeeding or pumping milk for their babies, including:
The Hospital’s new state-of-the-art human milk management center helps ensure that infants receive optimal nutrition through human milk during their hospitalization.
The human milk management center is staffed by trained milk technicians who work with lactation specialists to develop a plan of care for babies with special needs.
The center can provide a variety of services to mothers of hospitalized babies, including: human milk management, skim milk, fractionation of human milk, human milk analysis and donor milk. For more details, see our human milk management center.
Our lactation consultants and breastfeeding resource nurses can do more than teach you how to provide milk for your child; they can also address any breastfeeding concerns or challenges you face along the way. For details about how a one-on-one lactation consultation with one of our experts can help you, see What is a lactation consultant?
You can pump your milk at your baby's bedside or in one of the private rooms around the Hospital. For a complete list of rooms (and directions) where you can pump your milk while visiting the Hospital, see pump rooms.
Many moms of hospitalized babies find renting an electric breast pump for home use helps them to provide a continuous milk supply for their baby, even if the baby cannot feed at the breast. The milk pumped at home can be refrigerated or frozen and brought into the Hospital for use by your baby when she is ready. To learn about renting a breast pump from the Hospital or at a location near your home, see breast pump rentals.
We also offer a variety of online breastfeeding resources to help you better understand how human milk can make a difference in your baby’s brain development, ability to heal and overall health.
