The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia's Division of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology has one of the few programs in the United States dedicated exclusively to the care of pediatric heart patients.
The team includes:
Each year, they provide anesthesia and pain management during more than 3,000 surgeries and other procedures for infants, children and adolescents.
Children with heart defects may react differently to anesthesia, because they can have lower levels of oxygen in their blood and for other reasons. This is why we have a special anesthesia team only for cardiac patients. This team attends to Cardiac Center patients any time anesthesia is needed. For instance, if your child were to need to have her appendix removed or ear tubes placed years after cardiac surgery, our pediatric cardiac anesthesia team would be there.
In addition to anesthesia during surgery, they provide pain management for heart patients and sedation during echocardiography for infants and small or very active children. Anesthesia results in a clearer “echo” image and patients recover quickly.
The division also manages the largest training program in the world for pediatric anesthesiologists and critical care specialists and has trained more than 200 physicians.
Eight board-certified pediatric cardiothoracic anesthesiologists provide comprehensive anesthesia services for patients in the cardiac operating rooms, catheterization laboratories, and in other settings. The team also provides pain management for children with heart disease.
