CATIPIHLER
CATIPIHLER (Children’s Hospital Assessment and Treatment Implementation Program for Infants/Toddlers with Hearing Loss – Enhancement Rehabilitation) is a program designed to support and provide information to families whose young children (from time of diagnosis until entry into kindergarten) have been diagnosed with any type of hearing loss managed by CHOP Audiologists.
The program also helps families identify and access services both inside and outside the Hospital, including options for optimal communication development.
Our services
Educational consultant services
Education workshops
An opportunity for your family to learn about educating your child who has been newly diagnosed with hearing loss.
Education workshops provide assistance with understanding:
- Your child’s audiogram
- Types of therapy services
- Educational Law
- Communication options and educational settings
- The importance of encouraging learning in the home
Evening parent meetings
Various topics are presented during the meetings, held at different CHOP locations. Parent meetings provide you with an opportunity to meet other families.
Phone or in-person consultations
Educators from the CATIPIHLER program will contact you to review your child’s educational needs.
Speech and language assessment and intervention sessions
Our Speech-Language Pathologist helps children with hearing loss develop speech, language, and auditory skills.
These services are not meant to replace your child’s Early Intervention services but rather to work in collaboration with your service provider. Early Intervention service providers are welcome to attend these session.
Sessions are designed to work closely with parents to:
- Provide information regarding normal auditory/speech/language development
- Model techniques for facilitating spoken language
- Discuss activities designed to help your child reach auditory/speech/language milestones
- Monitor your child’s progress
Family Wellness Services
Adjustment to hearing loss consultation
The consultation includes a visit with your family to:
- Discuss your understanding of your child’s hearing loss
- Discuss how you can help your child make a healthy adjustment to his hearing loss
- Identify barriers or problems to follow-through and offer suggestions to overcome these barriers
- Provide you with information about:
- Normal social, emotional and behavior development between birth and age 9 years
- What families and schools can do to promote this development
- The importance of consistent effective communication between your child and you
- Provide intervention and/or referrals to help during the more challenging times

CATIPIHLER team
The CATIPIHLER team includes audiologists, speech-language pathologists, educators and mental health professionals. CATIPIHLER works collaboratively with Early Intervention providers to support children from the time of diagnosis until entry into kindergarten.
