How to Arrange a Transport
To arrange a transport, please call 215-590-2160 from outside Children's Hospital or ext. 4-2160 within the Hospital. This is a direct connection to our 24-hour communications center.
Types of transfers
The Emergency Transport Program facilitates the transfer of patients to and from The Children's
- Incoming interfacility transfers
- Outgoing interfacility transfers
- Outgoing transfers to home
We use an interdisciplinary approach to make complex transport arrangements and collaborative decisions regarding transport modes such as BLS, ALS and critical care.
Making a transfer request
Your transfer request begins with your call to the communications center at 215-590-2160 or ext. 4-2160. We will respond to your call as follows:

On a recorded line, the communications specialist will obtain basic patient information.
- Your call will be directed to the intake coordinating nurse, who will obtain all pertinent clinical data.
- The intake coordinator will collaborate with the appropriate medical command physician to review the patient's history, to discuss medical management and to determine the mode of transport.
- The medical command physician will assist the referring physician and staff in managing the patient's care from the time of referral until the child arrives at Children's Hospital.

How patients are transported
Patients may be transported by ambulance, rotor wing or fixed wing aircraft as determined by the specific situation.
What we'll need from you
To facilitate patient transfer, please have copies of the patient's medical record, X-rays, laboratory data and other pertinent information available for the transport team when they arrive.
