The Nutrition Fellowship Training Program is directed toward individuals who have completed their residency training in pediatrics and desire an academic career in clinical nutrition. Flexibility to coordinate training with related fellowship programs (GI, Neonatology, Endocrinology, etc.) is also available to allow the fellow to become double-board eligible.
This three-year program is designed to provide both clinical and research experience and to prepare the trainee to qualify for the specialty board in clinical nutrition. The combined fellowships are usually four years in order to complete all aspects of training. The fellow will be exposed to the broad aspects of nutrition in clinical pediatrics within the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition and through the clinical services of The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
The first year of the program is devoted principally to clinical training with inpatient and outpatient services. The inpatient program is organized through the hospital-wide Nutrition Support Service, where the fellow supervises and consults in the care of children requiring extensive nutritional status assessment and parenteral or nutritional support. The fellow participates in other subspecialty clinics requiring nutritional evaluation and management, including the Lipid-Heart, GI, Obesity, Metabolic Disease, Feeding Program, and Endocrinology.
The second and third years are devoted to laboratory and/or clinical research. A major research project and an appropriate mentor are selected during the first year. A variety of opportunities are available within the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition and the Nutrition Center. Other opportunities available for research training include other academic divisions of Children's Hospital and various laboratories and centers within the University of Pennsylvania.
