The Hemophilia Program was established in 1973 and has become a center of excellence for diagnosis, treatment and prevention of bleeding for children and adolescents with hemophilia, von Willebrand disease, platelet disorders and other bleeding disorders.
With the comprehensive team approach, the emphasis of this team is education and development of individualized plans of care to prevent complications of bleeding and treatment.
The Bleeding Disorders team is led by Leslie Raffini, M.D. medical director. The team has patient education as a focus to help parents and patients become active members of the team, provide self-treatment at home when appropriate and to help promote optimal health for all individuals with bleeding disorders.
This collaboration begins at diagnosis and finishes after successful transition to adult healthcare decades later. Treatment for acute bleeding episodes is provided five days a week in the HTC to allow early treatment ant to minimize need for Emergency Department visits.
An additional emphasis for families with inherited bleeding disorders is the focus on genetic testing, genetic education and outreach to potential family members at risk for inheriting or passing on bleeding disorders.
