Each year we receive more than 400 inquiries from families outside the U.S. seeking treatment in cardiac care, cancer care, endocrinology, orthopaedics, neurology, plastic surgery, urology and many other areas.
The staff of The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia's International Medicine program are experienced employees dedicated to helping families decide if treatment at CHOP is a viable option, and to helping those who do come here navigate appointments and the city of Philadelphia.
You may contact us by e-mail, phone, fax or regular mail. (See our contact information.) We will ask you to fill out an intake form and send us your child’s complete medical records, in English.
Doctors and other staff will review the records. We prepare medical cost estimates for those patients whom our doctors believe should be treated here. Generally it takes several weeks to prepare a medical cost estimate; this varies depending on the complexity of the case and the quality of the medical records.
There is no charge for the review of records or the preparation of the estimate.
International families are required to pay 100 percent of the estimate before the date of the first appointment. If the actual cost of care is lower than the estimate, we provide a refund; if higher, the family must pay the additional amount. Families are responsible for other costs such as travel and lodging.
Once a family has decided to travel here for treatment and payment is received, our staff serves as the link between the Hospital and the family, embassies, physicians in the home country and others. We will:
In addition, we will help families find restaurants and places of worship in Philadelphia and can assist with banking, among many other services.
