Hematopathology | The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia

The hematopathology service at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia coordinates with various laboratory services for the diagnosis of disorders involving hematopoietic cells. In many cases, the service triages patient samples, assigns appropriate portions to relevant laboratories, and integrates resulting findings to generate a unified and comprehensive diagnosis. Specimens can be sent to the hematopathology service using the Bone Marrow Submission Form, and will  be assigned to the appropriate laboratories. Alternatively, specimens can be submitted directly to the appropriate laboratories with the request for hematopathology diagnostic interpretation.

The hematopathology service collaborates closely with the following laboratories:

Anatomic Pathology: tissue biopsies and second opinion of glass slide sections, including paraffin immunohistochemical stains.

Hematology Laboratory: bone marrow aspirates cytochemical stains, body fluids, and peripheral blood, including cytochemical stains (SBB, MPO, PAS, NSE, CAE, AP)

Immunology Laboratory: tissue biopsies, body fluids, bone marrow aspirate, and peripheral blood for flow cytometry for leukemia, lymphoma, ALPS (autoimmune lymphoproliferative disorder), and DHR (chronic granulomatous disease).

Cancer Cytogenetics Laboratory: tissue biopsies and bone marrow aspirates for karyotype and SNP array. Biopsy, aspirates, and unstained glass side tissue sections for FISH analysis.
