Central Laboratory Services supports all the Clinical Laboratories by processing and distributing all samples which enter the Clinical Laboratory Complex. The following duties and processes are overseen by Central Laboratory Services.
All laboratory tests must be requested by a physician or other approved person, i.e. nurse practitioner, with privileges at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia or its affiliates. The test orders must be written on the patient's chart and should be ordered through the Hospital Information System (HIS). If not ordered through HIS, the sample must be sent along with an appropriate manual requisition.
Specimens delivered to the Clinical Laboratories are received in Central Laboratory Services, Room 5188 Main Building. All specimens that arrive in Central Lab Services are sorted according to the laboratory section and/or priority status. Exception: Blood Bank specimens should be delivered directly to the Blood Bank, Room 5125 Main Building.
All specimens MUST be transported in sealed biohazard transport bags and must be accompanied by a specimen requisition. Only ONE patient test order should be placed in each bag.
Central Laboratory Services stores all specimens for all Clinical Laboratory sections which are closed (i.e. after hours, weekends, and holidays). These specimens are stored in accordance with directives supplied by each laboratory section.
