Collect
Draining in a sterile leak-proof cap container or double swab culture device; aspirate in syringe (For Surgical specimens, see Surgical Specimen Collection Algorithm
Volume Required
1-5mLs of fluid/draining or 1 double swab culture device
Minimum Required
1mL of fluid/drainage; 1 double swab culture device
Transport
Send to laboratory immediately at room temperature. If specimen submitted in a syringe, the needle must be removed prior to sending it to the laboratory
Stability
Swab: up to 2 hours at room temperature
Processing
Aspirate/drainage specimen is preferred over swabs.

Remarks
If specimen is a closed abscess, decontaminate unbroken skin w/95% alcohol before collection. If anaerobes are suspected, also order an anaerobic culture and send in proper anaerobic transport.
