    Processing

    This test consists of two parts:
    Rapid testing for Plasmodium antigens and thick and thin blood smears.
    The smears are performed to confirm and calculate parasitemia of Plasmodium spp. and to detect other blood parasites.
    Only one antigen test will be performed per patient episode/admission

    Unacceptable conditions

    Specimens not submitted in EDTA or received after one hour of collection

Remarks

If cyclic fever present, collect specimen 1 hour prior to anticipated fever spike. Contact Microbiology Lab (x42331) concerning additional specimen collection information if necessary.
A preliminary result is available the same day if the lab is notified of impending specimen collection and the specimen is received by noon.
