    Stool or colonic aspirate in clean leak-proof container or Enteric Transport Medium (ETM)

    Volume Required

    1 tablespoon stool or 5mLs of colonic aspirate

    Minimum Required

    1 tablespoon stool or 5mLs of colonic aspirate

    Transport

    Unpreserved - immediately at room temperature

    Stool in ETM - ASAP at room temperature

    Stability

    Specimens in ETM: 72 hours after collection
    Specimens NOT in ETM: 1 hour after collection

    Unacceptable conditions

    Specimen submitted on a swab, containing barium or refrigerated

Remarks

Recommended for any child with bloody diarrhea or a history of bloody diarrhea. If patient has had barium: specimen should not be submitted until >=7 days later.
The assay performed detects Shiga Toxins I and II.
